alpha channel
An alpha channel is a component of a digital image file that stores transparency or opacity information for each pixel alongside standard color data such as red, green, and blue. Introduced to facilitate digital compositing, it specifies the degree to which a foreground element covers an underlying background, typically represented on a numerical scale where minimum values indicate complete transparency and maximum values indicate full opacity. In addition to rendering smooth edges and realistic blending in computer graphics, the alpha channel functions as a spatial matte or mask to isolate specific visual regions, direct focus, and control localized modifications in image processing and computer vision workflows.

Why you should read this
Introduces Alpha-CLIP, an enhanced CLIP model with an auxiliary alpha channel that enables fine-grained, region-specific focus while preserving contextual awareness across open-world recognition, multimodal language models, and 2D/3D generation tasks.
Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP) plays an essential role in extracting valuable content information from images across diverse tasks. It aligns textual and visual modalities to comprehend the entire image, including all the details, even those irrelevant to specific tasks. However, for a finer understanding and controlled editing of images, it becomes crucial to focus on specific regions of interest, which can be indicated as points, masks, or boxes by humans or perception models. To fulfill the requirements, we introduce Alpha-CLIP, an enhanced version of CLIP with an auxiliary alpha channel to suggest attentive regions and fine-tuned with constructed millions of RGBA region-text pairs. Alpha-CLIP not only preserves the visual recognition ability of CLIP but also enables precise control over the emphasis of image contents. It demonstrates effectiveness in various tasks, including but not limited to open-world recognition, multimodal large language models, and conditional 2D / 3D generation. It has a strong potential to serve as a versatile tool for image-related tasks. Our project is with codes and models available is linked to https://aleafy.github.io/alpha-clip/.

Compositing digital images
Thomas K. Porter, Tom Duff
Why you should read this
Introduces the alpha channel and premultiplied alpha alongside the foundational algebra of compositing operators, establishing the standard mathematical framework used across modern digital image synthesis.
Most computer graphics pictures have been computed all at once, so that the rendering program takes care of all computations relating to the overlap of objects. There are several applications. however, where elements must be rendered separately, relying on compositing techniques for the anti-aliased accumulation of the full image. This paper presents the case for four-channel pictures, demonstrating that a matte component can be computed similarly to the color channels. The paper discusses guidelines for the generation of elements and the arithmetic for their arbitrary compositing.
