guidance image

A guidance image is a reference image used in image processing and computer vision to direct and control the filtering, enhancement, or reconstruction of a target image or data map. It supplies structural and spatial information, such as sharp edges, gradients, and local textures, which serve as priors for operations like edge-preserving smoothing, upsampling, denoising, and color transfer. A guidance image can either be the input image itself or a separate, often higher-resolution or cross-modal image, enabling the transfer of detailed boundary and texture features onto target outputs—such as low-resolution depth maps, alpha mattes, or tone-mapped layers—while preventing blurring and color bleeding across visual boundaries.
