ASSISTANT algorithm
The ASSISTANT algorithm is a supervised machine learning method used to construct decision trees from labeled examples for classification and automated knowledge acquisition in expert systems. Developed as an extension of the ID3 algorithm, ASSISTANT enhances traditional top-down decision tree induction by handling continuous numerical attributes in addition to discrete values, accommodating incomplete records with missing attributes, and supporting structured class hierarchies. A central feature of the algorithm is its use of pruning mechanisms to mitigate overfitting, enabling it to maintain accuracy and generate concise, interpretable decision models even when applied to complex or noisy real-world data.
